Dieting Does Not Have to be Painful

Most people feel that dieting has to be a painful process of deprivation and self-control. While some measure of control is certainly needed, deprivation is really not necessary. Most of dieting is about mindset.

If a person sees diet as a "four-letter word," he or she will not do well at it. If, on the other hand, that same person sees a diet as being the beginning of a change and a new way of life that will help him or her accomplish goals and live well, it is much more likely that the diet will be successful.

Once a person who is very overweight begins to lose weight, he or she will often discover that obesity is much more painful than dieting. A very obese person often has trouble with basic, daily tasks. Someone who is thinner has less trouble with these things, and also has fewer health problems that must be considered.

Because of this, people who begin to lose weight often want to continue dieting so that they can continue to feel better. Some people, however, have serious food addictions that they can do little about, and these people need more help for their obesity than just a diet plan. Counseling is often necessary.

In order to achieve weight loss, a person who is dieting knows that he or she must continue to work for it. There is no realistic way to remain sedentary, eat heavily, and stay thin. Some people may seem to live their lives this way, but it will catch up with them at some point. This is particularly true for people who may have dealt with childhood obesity and are now much thinner. Because they are in danger of becoming heavy again, they must be very careful with how much they eat and whether they exercise properly.

Everyone is different, and some people simply weigh less naturally than other people. Despite this, though, individuals who are serious about their weight loss will continue to work on it, even if they struggle and even if they gain some back or get discouraged.

They know that they can win if they continue to make the effort, and that is often what keeps them moving toward their weight loss goal. If they look at their dieting efforts in a positive way and continue to hold onto that mind set, they will be able to lose weight with better results than someone who looks at the experience as a negative one.
