Are you ready to start choosing dog names for a new puppy in your life? Dog names aren't hard to find, especially if you want to keep up with the Jones' and choose from the most popular dog names. Believe it or not, Rover and Spot aren't even on the list of the most popular dog names in the United States today.

Animal Shelter (.org) tells us that the most popular dog names these days are people names. Pet owners are shying away from naming their dogs cute names. More than half of dog owners today are choosing dog names much like they would their children's names, whereas only about one fifth are using traditional dog names like fluffy or blackie, or names that depict the dog's breed or looks. The top 10 names on Animal Shelter's list are:

For Boy Dogs
Max, Jake, Buddy, Bear, Bailey, Shadow, Sam, Lucky, Rocky, and Buster.

For Girl Dogs
Maggie, Bear, Mollie, Shadow, Lady, Sadie, Lucky, Lucy, Daisy, and Brandy.

It seems that the wonderful people at the Pet Place agree about popular dog names going to the humans (pun intended). Here are he most popular dog names according to Pet Place:

For Boy Dogs
Max, Buddy, Jake, Rocky, Bailey, Buster, Cody, Charlie, Bear, and Jack.

For Girl Dogs
Molly, Maggie, Daisy, Lucy, Sadie, Ginger, Chloe, Bailey, Sophie, and Zoe.

The New York Department of Health released the all important list of the most popular dog names, and even in a place as diverse as New York, the dog names are right on track with the rest of the country.

For Boy Dogs
Max, Jake, Buddy, Lucky, Rocky, Sam, Buster, Casey, Charlie, and Cody.

For Girl Dogs
Maggie, Molly, Lady, Daisy, Sadie, Lucy, Ginger, Chloe, Abby, and Bailey.

Of these very reliable sources for popular dog names lists, Max, Jake and Buddy top the list for boys, Maggie, Mollie and Sadie for girls. Did you find the popular dog name that you like best? I'm sure you've at least considered some of these names, but you may not be able to use them because all of your neighbors and families pets already have the best ones taken. If that is the case, you'll have to be creative and come up with your own dog names.

A few tips to finding great, but maybe not the most popular dog names are to keep the name short and easy to say, one or two syllables is best. Stay away from names that sound like commands that you will be giving your dog. Try not to rhyme your dog's name with sit, for example. Okay, maybe that's a bad example, but you get my meaning. When you think you've found a name you like, go ahead and give it a try for a day or two and see how it feels after that. If you still love it, keep it. If not, then move on to the next, but don't wait too long or your puppy will get confused. If your dog is adopted, try to keep his or her given name. The very best dog names are the ones that will have your dog come running when you call it.
