The first and foremost thing to realize when going about trying to treat your depression is that you are not helpless. You have the ability to choose the best type of treatment for yourself and be informed of what's available to you. The first step when having depression it to talk to your Physician. They can help devise a plan that suits your lifestyle and will best defeat the illness.

Make sure you feel comfortable with your doctor. Make sure he is listening to you and your needs and understand your wants and desires. You have the right to this type of medical treatment. There are many ways you can study the different forms of treatment both online and off so that you feel in control and like you have an active part in your treatment decision.

Your comfort level is not limited to the very beginning decision of a doctor. Even after you start your treatment if you are not comfortable it is your right to seek different medical advice. It is possible to experience the effects of depression even after treatment as ended. Do not feel bad about having to ask for help again.

There are several drugs that are commonly used in the treatment of depression. One of the first drugs developed was called Prozac. Prozac did and still does relieve many of the symptoms of depression including social phobia, obsessiveness, anxiety, and many eating disorders often brought on by depression such as anorexia and bulimia.

There also new forms of drugs in the markets such as Wellbutrin, Remeron, Cymbalta and others. These drugs are better at reducing the effects of depression than drugs like Prozac, but because they are newer doctors often prescribe them less often.

There are different side effects for all of the above drugs ranging from increased appetite to complete loss of appetite and including sleep or sexual problems, but most depression sufferers are more than happy to deal with them in order to relieve the depression. It is up to you to decide what works best in your life. Sometimes it takes trying several different treatment methods before you and your doctor hit upon the right combination for you and your life.

An important part in the treatment of depression is to recognize any thoughts of suicide. Suicidal tendencies are highest in teenagers experiencing depression and the leading cause of suicide in that age group. However, teenagers are not the only ones that experience suicidal thoughts during bouts of depression. The elderly are the second most common age group affected by these side effects of depression, and more and more middle aged people are feeling overcome by depression due to stress and anxiety and being affected by thoughts of suicide.
It is very important to seek the help of a qualified psychiatrist if you experience any thoughts of this nature. It is never something to put off or play down. Feelings of guilt and shame are often accompanied by depression and magnified by the suggestion of needing a psychiatrist. These feelings are put upon us by societal pressures and have no basis. It is vital to your health to seek the kind of care that you need to treat your depression.

What you have found the care and treatment plan to suit your life you will begin to experience the joy of knowing that you are in control and on your way to health and happiness. Don't let depression rule your life. Get the help that you need and take charge of it now. There is a brighter happier world waiting for you.
