There are various reasons why we should be prepared to remove excess water before hand, considering accidents like floods and hurricanes, or simply basement flooding due to overrunning tap water or leaking drainage. However, the most necessary situation to get rid of water as soon as possible is during floods, because of the stagnant water that submerges various structures, leading to their long lasting damage. The best way out of this condition, is to come up with an efficient flood damage cleanup program that would set us back on track, without much delay at our work.

The primary thing that a person should be concerned about, during a flood damage cleanup, is to get rid of the stagnant water that remains clogged at the base of the house. This water gradually damages the substances it comes in contact with and may brew harmful microorganisms, which would affect our health or hygiene. Thus, it should be flushed or pumped out at the earliest possible opportunity, allowing us to continue with our flood damage cleanup properly. Even after the normal water level is achieved, it might be noted that there is water still present at our basement; this obviously could be taken care of by a sump pump that flushes the water out of the basement.

To proceed further with the flood damage cleanup, it may be thought of wisely, if we could simply check out the electricity wiring. While doing so try to wear rubber shoes and gloves, so that you do not receive any shocks or jolts from the lines. It would be better if the electric lines were powered off while you carry on your work, because any form of sudden short circuit may be fatal if there is considerable amount of water to do the damage. It would also be better if you refrain from the use of oven s or gas stoves to heat up your house, the carbon monoxide produced by them could lower down your blood's capacity of carrying oxygen, thus reducing our health.

We must make sure that we use cleaning agents, like that of disinfectants, in flood damage cleanup after we have pumped out or got rid of the stagnant water, and subsequently dried the place as much as possible. To go about cleaning the moist regions with the disinfectants we must be careful not to miss out any part; these regions brew mildew and other forms of fungi that might rot the material in subsequent times. The basic ingredient used during these flood damage cleanup programs is chlorine bleach, which is to be mixed in the proportion of 1:10 with that of water, before spraying it. During the process we must avoid spraying on fabrics as it might damage the color of it.

To make any flood damage cleanup program successful, these things must be performed very cautiously without fail or negligence. As it is a flood destroys or damages a number of things in the regions it hits, but it is up to us to see to it that, the extent of damage does not increase indirectly.
